The Royal Masonic Cyclopaedia was first issued in six parts at intervals between 1875 and 1877,
a much-needed encyclopaedic handbook designed specifically for English Freemason.
But it was more than that. In the guise of a masonic reference book,
Mackenzie and his fellow contributors distilled the essence of Victorian esoteric thought,
and in so doing unwittingly provided a primary sourcebook for the history of the nineteenth-century Occult Revival.
This is the first modern reprint of this celebrated and important work,
which concentrated on the shadowy borderland between the more exotic high degrees of Freemasonry
and occultism proper and reflected Mackenzie's lifelong enthusiasm for hermetic philosophy in all its branches.
The Cyclopaedia's greatest influence, however, was on those esoterically inclined Freemasons
who created the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, making it an essential text for anyone
who wishes to understand the relationship between Freemasonry and occultism in the Victorian age.
